I wanted to write something meaningful about the past 10 years I've been a member of deviantART and express my gratitude toward other members past and present. I realize a lot of who I am today is from this once meager site.
Years ago I was looking for WinAMP skins and I came across a site called deviantART. I had never been to a site with so many different resources. The skins, wallpaper and 3D modelling was years ahead of anything I had seen at the time. One person on the site (
) stood out for me. I loved the technical style displayed in many of his designs and I knew that I wanted to create my own images to be just as great. I signed up.
Five years later I woke up, logged in and saw I had 114 unread messages. I soon realized I had received my very first Daily Deviation. A simple resources pack of custom shapes. It was suggested by
. I spent the whole day replying to compliments of my entire resources gallery. It was one of my best days and I couldn't really share it with anyone in my real life as none of my friends have even heard of this site. A personal triumph kept personal.
My name is Marshall Watson. I still don't consider myself an artist but I do like to create images from nothing, simply to be viewed by others. I've had the same job, same office, same title at the same Civil Engineering firm that hired me 10 years ago but the abilities I've learned from the other members of dA created another revenue stream for myself. I've been blessed with creating plan renderings used in everything from planning & zoning meetings to forensic investigations. It's not glamorous but it does pay well and I have you guys to thank.
Thank you to the other members who contribute their time to create tutorials and resource packs. Thank you to all the members who contribute their time in the forums to teach other members. You may not even know the influence you've had on other people's lives.
Shortly after joining dA I saw these two images and realized two things;
1.) I didn't know anything about 3D rendering.
